Annual holiday concert is Friday
The Hilo Women’s Club annual Holiday Music Concert is slated for 6:30 p.m. Friday (Dec. 4) at the club’s clubhouse at 7 Lele St. in Hilo.
Come with your entire ohana and enjoy an elegant evening of elevating classical holiday favorites presented by the Lissoni String Quartet featuring Herb Mahelona, Michael Russell, Ray Broggini and Cathy Young.
Ticket prices are $25 for adults and $12 for children 12 and younger. Refreshments will be provided.
Funds received go directly to Hilo and surrounding communities in the form of donations to the Food Basket, scholarships and much more.
UPW retirees group to meet Dec. 11
The UPW Retirees will host its quarterly meeting and annual Christmas luncheon at noon Dec. 11 at ‘Imiloa Sky Garden, 600 ‘Imiloa St. in Hilo.
Attendees will not only get in on the meeting and luncheon, they also will have the chance to hear from and meet with UPW dignitaries.

DAR sponsors essay contests
All students in grades 5-8 in public, private or parochial school or home-schooled are invited to participate in the American History Essay Contest sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution.
The Topic for 2015-16 is “A Colonial Family’s Reaction to the Stamp Act.” The Stamp Act, passed by British Parliament in 1765, required all colonists to pay a tax on every printed piece of paper they used. The essay should describe a colonial family’s discussion about the Stamp Act and what role it played in organizing the colonists against the British.
Essay length should be between 300 and 600 words for fifth-graders and 600 and 1,000 words for students in grades 6-8.
Students in grades 9-12 are invited to participate in the Christopher Columbus Essay Contest.
The Topic for 2015-16 is “Columbus and Lindbergh: A Journey Across the Atlantic.” The essay should discuss the similarities and differences between Columbus’ voyage to the new world and Charles Lindbergh’s first solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean.
The required length is for the essay is 800-1,200 words.
